In Greece, IOM is focusing on responding to the Mediterranean migrant’s crisis, in support of the Greek Government and in cooperation with all other agencies involved. IOM currently implements interventions within the areas of emergency, preparedness and response, disaster risk reduction, livelihoods, healthcare and psychosocial assistance, assisted voluntary return of migrants, migration and development, resettlement and repatriation, family reunification, counter human trafficking, assistance to vulnerable migrants.
Context:
IOM through the Project “Operation of 6 Shelters for Unaccompanied Minors in Greece” operates 6 Shelters for unaccompanied children in Athens, Patra and Thessaloniki. Shelters operate on a 24/7 basis by multidisciplinary teams ensuring the provision of food and non-food items, specialized psychosocial support and legal assistance, non-formal educational and recreational activities, community engagement and interpretation.
Under the overall supervision of the Project Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Shelter Coordinator, the successful candidate will be based at a Shelter in Athens and will have the following responsibilities:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Assess the psychological and / or psychiatric health of the unaccompanied children and conduct psychological assessments.
- Provide psychological support and counselling, aiming at a) anxiety and anger management, b) conflict management and abrupt behavioural changes, c) coping mechanisms to effectively respond on crises related to mental or psychological pressure, e) improving interpersonal relationships and f) cultivating skills and talents.
- Participate in the design and implementation of interventions to inform and raise awareness to unaccompanied children.
- Refer unaccompanied children to primary health care, if deemed necessary on the basis of their mental health status.
- Organize individual or group sessions to provide psychological support to the unaccompanied children, trying to discuss and assist children with challenges which may arise during their stay at the facility.
- Map existing national and humanitarian mental health and psychosocial services that are available and accessible to the site, in order to organize referrals.
- Collecting and monitoring all the required documents on a monthly basis for the donor.
- Coordinating in cooperation with the scientific team of the shelter, the children’s daily activities by mainly focusing on the organization of educational and recreational activities.
- Securing project implementation according to IOM rules and regulations.
- Perform other related duties that may be assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education
- • University degree in Psychology with minimum two years of relevant work experience.
• Licensed Psychologist.
• Master’s degree in a related field would be an advantage.
Experience and Skills
- • At least two years of relevant professional experience in psychosocial support, work in the migration and refugee context or any other relevant experience;
• Experience in emergency psychology is a distinct advantage;
• Previous experience working with children and/or vulnerable population preferred;
• Experience working in a multi-cultural environment preferred;
• Strong work ethics and commitment to humanitarian principles;
• Willingness to work in day/ night shifts, during holidays and weekends;
• Valid driver’s license with at least five years driving experience will be an advantage.
Languages
Fluency in English and Greek (written and oral) is required.
